The Cobra Plant or Whipcord Cobra Lily is blooming in high-altitude mountainous areas. It looks like the hood of a snake. Its leaves are like a transparent tube, and the upper part is bloated like a balloon. A little below this balloon-like part, there is a genuine part, from which a leaf comes out like a snake’s tongue.
In traditional medicine, its roots and stems are used as medicinal plants. It is used as a medicine to remove stomach worms in cattle. Its juice is applied to the wounds of cattle to kill any parasites. The dried powder of its branch is applied to snake bites. The seeds are mixed with salt and used to treat colic in sheep.
At present, not many people know about this plant. It is nothing less than a curiosity for those who see it for the first time, especially regarding its size. Some research papers have also been printed on this. Its plants are visible in the Uttarkashi district at an altitude of about 2000 to 3300 meters above sea level.
Whipcord cobra lily is a bisexual plant; in Hindi, it is called Bunk, Bagh, Gandhara or Nagparni. Its botanical names are Arisaema tortuosum Wall, a plant of the Araliaceae family. Due to the potentially toxic nature of this plant, it should only be used internally under the supervision of a qualified physician or knowledgeable.
14 species found in Uttarakhand
According to Dr Shambhu Prasad Nautiyal, a Uttarkashi resident interested in flora, there are about 183 species of this plant worldwide. Out of which 14 species are found only in Uttarakhand Himalayas. It is apparent in the high Himalayan lakes and the forests of Oak, Buransh and Deodar. Talking about Uttarkashi, this plant can be easily seen in Dodital, Nachiketa Tal.
The root is used more.
According to Nautiyal, its root is used more. Which is harvested in early spring and dried for later use. The new source is considered too dangerous to use, while the dried roots become dormant, so only partially dried roots are used medicinally.
What is used in
In some research papers, this plant has been used to cure rheumatism, abdominal pain, snakebite, piles, constipation, dyspepsia, colic pain, dysentery, contraceptive, worm infestation, dog bite and liver infection. Mention has been found. Its dried leaves are also used for respiratory problems.
