The word ‘Virginity‘ has been in constant discussion for the past few days. After demanding to stop the virginity test, now some people are demanding to change this word itself. Toronto-based author Nicole Hodges calls for the term ‘sexual debut’ to be used instead of ‘virginity’. Hodges told the BBC, ‘We are still using the old and useless word like ‘virginity’, which needs to be changed over time.’
New Name Given to Losing Virginity
According to Hodges, ‘It is not that the word virginity is out of date, just because it needs to be changed, but the concept of virginity is also out of date, and it does not exist because your sexual journey never ends. Instead, the word ‘sexual debut’ fits more. Hodges has also used this word several times in his new book.
In a tweet last year, Hodges wrote, ‘It’s time to rebrand the word virginity so that women don’t take it as a shortcoming. With virginity, it seems that you have lost something. We are in a new age now, but losing virginity here is still considered a shame. It needs to be changed. Virginity should be taken as a celebration. However, some experts do not agree with Hodges. They say that this will encourage the tendency to have sex.
“When you use words like virginity or sexual debut, you’re talking about the sexuality of that person,” says California sex educator Julia Feldman. Equal participation of the partner is necessary to experience sexual satisfaction. However, more work needs to be done on the term virginity. We have to come out of the concept of losing virginity after having sex only once.
