The word “Bharatavarsha” is first cited in the Vishnu Purana as the Desha (Varum), which lies north of the sea and is called Bharatam to the south of the Snowy Mountains; Bharata’s descendants live there. Bharata is called Bharata, the king of the mythological Vedic age and means country.

Wu Yin is the name given to India by the famous Chinese Buddhist scholar Xuanzang. He became famous for his seventeen-year journey in India (629 – 645 CE). The word Wu Yin means Five Indias.


Yindu is the current Chinese word for India and is derived from Hindu or Sindhu.


Hidush is another Persian name for India, found in the accounts of Darius the Great. Dara controlled the Indus Valley from Gandhara to modern Karachi around 515 BC.



Indo is the current Japanese name for the Republic of India.


The ancient Greek historian, diplomat and explorer, Megasthenes called India the name Indica. His famous work Indica is an account of the Maurya Empire. The original book is now lost, but fragments of it have survived in later Greek and Latin texts.
