Padmashri Sindhutai Sapkal Passed Away


Sindhutai Sapkal, known as the Nath of orphans, died on Tuesday. She had been ailing for the last one and a half months. A film has also been made about his life. Many orphans got support under the shade of Sindhutai’s motherly life. He opened many ashrams for orphans.

Sindhutai Sapkal was born on 14 November 1948 in the Wardha district of Maharashtra. The financial condition of his family was terrible. Sindhutai’s father’s name was Abhimanji Sathe. She dreamed that her daughter should get a good education, but due to child marriage, mother’s opposition and financial constraints, she could study only till four.

Sindhutai Sapkal Married at the age of just 9

Sindhutai Sapkal was married at the age of 9. Later on, Sindhutai fought for such women, used by the forest department and the zamindars to collect dung. Although his journey was not easy, there were many difficulties, but his confidence did not waver.


Landlord spread false rumours, homeless from home.

When Sindhutai Sapkal was 20 years old, she was falsely accused by a landlord. She was pregnant at that time. Her husband took the landlord’s charge as accurate and threw her out of the house. There was no shelter even in the maternal home. They were forced to take shelter in the cattle shed. Here he gave birth to his daughter.

Sindhutai reached Amravati with her daughter. Here in Chikaldara, 84 villages were evacuated for the tiger project. Sindhutai started fighting for the rehabilitation of the tribals here. The result was that the Forest Minister had to accept Sindhutai’s demand.

Sindhutai Sapkal adopted her daughter to Dagdu Seth Halwai, Pune Trust. She did this because she wanted to be the mother of orphans. After many years of struggle, Sindhutai opened her first ashram in Chikaldara. Here he gave shelter to one and a half thousand children. From here, her journey to become the mother of orphans started.


Run these institutions

Sindhutai Sapkal operated many institutions. These include Bal Niketan, Hadapsar, Pune, Savitribai Phule Balika Vastigriha, Chikaldara, Saptasindhu Mahila Aadhar Balsangopan, Gopika Gau Raksha Kendra, Wardha (Gopalan), Mamta Bal Sadan, Saswad, Abhiman Bal Bhavan, Wardha.

2010 Film

In 2010, a film was made in Marathi on the life of Sindhutai. The name of this film was- Mee Sindhutai Sapkal. It was also selected for its world premiere at the 54th London Film Festival. The producer of the film was Anant Mahadevan.

Sindhutai Sapkal has been honoured with more than 750 national and international awards. It also includes Padma Shri. The Government of Maharashtra honoured him with the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Samaj Bhushan Award in 2012.


In addition, he received the IT Profit Organization’s Adoptive Mata Award in 1996, the Maharashtra Government’s ‘Ahilyabai Holkar Award’ in 2010, the Pune Engineering College’s ‘College of Engineering Award’ in 2012, the Murtimant Aisathicha National Award in 2013 and the Dr Ram Award in 2017. He has also been honoured with Manohar Tripathi Award.

Apart from this, Sindhutai Sapkal has also been honoured with Dr Nirmalkumar Fadkule Memorial Award of Solapur, Rajai Award, Shivlila Mahila Gaurav Award, ‘Jeevan Gaurav Award’ of Pune University.
