To Find Life On Mars, The Surface Would Have To Be Dug Up To 6.6 Feet


NASA’s Curiosity Rover and Perseverance Rover are searching for evidence of ancient life on the surface of Mars. But now, it is known that we may have to dig a lot deeper to get this evidence.

If there was life on Mars, any evidence of leftover amino acids from that time might have been buried at least 6.6 feet below the ground. This is because Mars does not have a magnetic field, and due to its weak atmosphere, the cosmic radiation on its surface is much higher than on Earth. And amino acids are destroyed by cosmic radiation.

Physicist Alexander Pavlov of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center says that cosmic radiation, and amino acids, in rocks and regolith on the surface of Mars are much more than previously thought. Destroys much faster.


Cosmic radiation is a big problem for Mars exploration. Humans on Earth are exposed to about 0.33 millisieverts of cosmic radiation yearly. On Mars, the annual exposure can exceed 250 millisieverts.

Digging deeper may reveal evidence of life.

According to the research published in Astrobiology, Pavlov and his team wanted to understand better the possibility of finding evidence of amino acids on the surface of Mars. So he experimented.

They created Mars-like soil by mixing silica, hydrated silica, or silica and perchlorates (salts) and mixed amino acids with minerals. They were then sealed in test tubes. Different test tubes show the atmosphere of the planet Mars at different temperatures. Then, the team left radiation on him. This experiment destroyed the amino acids, leaving the soil simulant.


This showed that silicates, especially silicates containing perchlorates, significantly increased the rate at which amino acids were destroyed. This means that any amino acid on the surface of Mars that is about 100 million years old will have been eliminated.

Therefore, to find amino acids on Mars, you must dig a little deeper than the surface. That is, 6.6 feet deep. Let us tell you that the rover of Mars can drill only up to 2 inches.
