Sri Lanka is currently facing a severe economic crisis. The economy of this country has completely derailed. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa imposed a state of emergency in the country for a few days, after which the people there took to the streets. The crisis has become so severe that even the broadcast of IPL 2022 has come to a standstill in Sri Lanka.
This is the 15th season of the Asia Cup.
Now Sri Lankan fans may get another setback on the cricket front. Due to the current economic crisis, the hosting of this year’s Asia Cup may be snatched from Sri Lanka. The Asia Cup will be held in Sri Lanka from August 27 to September 11. This 15th edition of the Asia Cup is to be played in 20 overs keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup.
According to media reports, due to the current financial crisis in Sri Lanka, it seems challenging to organize the Asia Cup there. It can be shifted to another country. However, the final decision has not been taken yet. The report further states that the final decision regarding the venue change will be taken at the International Cricket Council (ICC) quarterly meeting held in Dubai.
Six teams will participate in the tournament
Six teams are going to participate in the Asia Cup 2022. Sri Lanka, defending champions India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, have already qualified for the tournament. After this, the sixth and final team will be decided after the qualifying tournament. The qualifying tournament of six teams will start on August 20.
India is the current champion.
The last edition of the T20 format Asia Cup was held in Bangladesh in 2016. MS Dhoni-led India defeated hosts Bangladesh by eight wickets in a rain-hit match. Then the Indian team was again victorious in the upcoming season in the United Arab Emirates, played in the 50-over format.
