ICC to use word ‘Batter’ instead of ‘Batsman’ from T20 World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to use the word ‘batter’ in place of ‘batsman’ from this month’s men’s T20 World Cup (ICC T20 World Cup 2021), calling it a natural and long-needed move. Last month, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) said that the word ‘batter‘ would be used instead of ‘batsman’ in the rules of cricket. Now this change will be seen everywhere in the ICC’s conditions of play.

The ICC said that for the last four years, the word ‘batter’ is being used regularly in commentary instead of ‘batsman’. ICC CEO Geoff Allardyce said that the decision of the MCC is welcome. He said, “This word is being used on our channels and in commentary for a long time. We welcome the decision of MCC to implement it. This is a natural and long-needed change.”

He said, “Sports development will not happen just by changing the language. We have to make sure that both boys and girls playing cricket have an interesting experience and they can progress as cricketers without any hindrances.” Let us tell you that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be played in Oman and UAE from 17 October to 14 November.

The first round of the tournament will be a qualifying event, where eight teams will play to qualify in advance, while four teams will join for the qualifiers. There are eight teams to make the main round: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman and Papua New Guinea.

The event was earlier scheduled to be held in India, but a few months back the suspension in the middle of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season forced the board to change the venue. Although the situation of Kovid-19 in India is currently under control, but in September-October, the third wave of the virus is being feared in the country. The T20 World Cup is also going to happen around the same time. In such a situation, the decision to host this event in India was considered very risky.
