The fifth test match between India and England is being played at Edgbaston. The Indian team is currently leading 2-1 in the five-match Test series. If the Indian team draws or wins the match, then it will capture the series. India last captured a Test series on English soil in 2007.
The Indian team did not have a good start in this match, and their five wickets fell for 98 runs. Five top-order batters, including Kohli, and Pujara, could not do anything special. In such a situation, in this challenging time, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja gave life to the Indian innings by sharing brilliant 222 runs. By the end of the first day’s play, India had scored 338 runs for seven wickets.
Gill-Pujara split in the opening.
Rohit Sharma could not participate in this match due to being Corona positive. In such a situation, experienced batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill came for the opening. But this experiment was unsuccessful for India, and both the openers were settled cheaply. In the seventh over of the innings, Gill (17 runs) could not restrain the delivery of Anderson’s off-stump, and he was caught at slips to Crowley.
It was Cheteshwar Pujara’s turn to get out after Gill. Pujara wanted to release Jimmy Anderson’s ball outside the off-stump, but the ball took the bat’s edge and went into Jack Crowley’s hands. Pujara contributed 13 runs facing 46 balls. Anderson has dismissed Pujara for the 12th time in Test cricket.
Virat Kohli Century Drought Continues.
After Pujara’s dismissal, Hanuma Vihari and Virat Kohli were responsible for making a significant partnership, but both the players could not do much. Vihari dodges the ball coming inside Matty Potts, and the ball hits the pad. The umpire did not hesitate to raise his finger in such a situation. Hanuma scored 20 runs off 53 balls.
Shortly after Vihari’s dismissal, Virat Kohli also kept walking. Virat Kohli (11 runs) wanted to leave the ball outside the off-stump, but the ball took the edge of the bat and went to the wickets. With this, the wait for Virat’s international century has increased further. Kohli scored his last century in November 2019.
Shreyas Iyer did not work
Shreyas Iyer, who flopped with the bat in the recent T20 series against South Africa, also could not do much. James Anderson caught Shreyas on a short pitch ball at the hands of wicketkeeper Sam Billings. Iyer scored 15 runs off 11 balls.
