The biggest fixing scandal in cricket history came to light during the series between India and South Africa in 2000. Five team players contacted the bookies during this tour to fix the matches. Team India captain Mohammad Azharuddin and South Africa captain Hansie Cronje were involved.

Many players, including Herschelle Gibbs, and Nikki Boye, came under the wraps of this fixing. Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja were banned for life after this controversy. Azharuddin fought for 11 years to get himself cleared of these charges and got a clean chit from the Supreme Court.

Pakistan tour of England in 2010

In 2010, the Pakistan team went on a tour of England. A big match-fixing scandal came to the fore on this tour. Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and the then team captain Salman Butt were found involved in spot-fixing. In a sting operation, it was revealed that bookie Mazhar Mazeen had asked Amir and Asif to bowl no balls in the allotted overs. Salman Butt was also in this video. ICC banned all three players in the year 2011 after this case.

The fixing scandal happened in IPL too.

In 2013, the black spot of fixing had also been put on IPL. During this season of IPL, Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandoulia were arrested on charges of spot-fixing in IPL matches. These three players were part of the Rajasthan Royals team. After this case, BCCI banned Sreesanth and Ankit Chavan for life. However, later the court removed Sreesanth’s life ban to just seven years. Sreesanth and Chavan had themselves admitted to being involved in spot-fixing.
