The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has once again handed over the captaincy of the Test team to Shakib Al Hasan. Shakib has been given this responsibility in place of Mominul Haque, who resigned from the captaincy on 31 May. Shakib has already taken over the responsibility of Test captaincy. Apart from this, the board has made Liton Das the vice-captain of the Test team.
BCB gave this statement
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Haque said, “I have spoken to Shakib, and he is available to play and take over this responsibility.” After the West Indies series, we will also play a series with Zimbabwe. Although whether Shakib will play in that series or not can be confirmed yet. It is not yet clear how long Shakib will remain the captain of Bangladesh.
Najmul further said, ‘I had three names. The people who selected the captain held a meeting and gave me three names, in which one was to be chosen as the captain and the other as the vice-captain. Had Shakib refused the captaincy, we would have turned to the other two players. We wanted to appoint both a new captain and a vice-captain. After initial discussions, we decided to make Shakib Al Hasan captain and Liton Das vice-captain.
35-year-old Shakib first captained him in the match against West Indies in 2009. Then captained the team for six more games in 2010 and led the team against Zimbabwe in August 2011. Then Shakib took over the Test captaincy of Bangladesh once again in December 2017, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim. But in 2019, he had to lose his captaincy after facing a ban in a case related to fixing. Shakib has captained Bangladesh in 14 Test matches overall, in which the team has won three games and lost 11.
