India’s hopes of winning a medal in the freestyle (125 kg category) at the Tokyo Olympic Games have suffered significantly. Freestyle wrestler Sumit Malik, who has qualified for the Olympics, has failed the dope test. Sumit Malik will not take part in Tokyo Olympics 2020 due to failing the dope test.
Sumit Malik Lost Olympic Ticket
Sumit Malik was a dope test during the Olympic qualifiers organised by United World Wrestling in Sofia, Bulgaria, from May 6-9. Delhi wrestler Sumit had secured an Olympic ticket for the 125 kg freestyle event in Sofia itself.
According to the information revealed, India has lost the 125 kg category seat in the Olympics in the dope test. Although earlier, there were speculations that Sumit Malik would not be suspended from participating in the Olympics. But now, it is clear that Sumit Malik will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics this year.
Got Olympic Ticket
In the semi-final, the Indian wrestler defeated Venezuelan wrestler Jose Daniele Diaz 5-0 to win the final against Russia’s Sergei Kozyrev. However, he withdrew from the last due to injury. Malik won the silver medal.
Wrestlers who reached the finals from every category in Sofia got Olympic tickets. The Olympics is to be held in Tokyo from 23 July this year. Malik is the fourth Indian freestyle wrestler to have secured an Olympic quota in the men’s category. Before him, Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) have also won Olympic tickets.
With just 49 days left for the Tokyo Olympics, Malik’s failure in the dope test has weakened the Indian wrestling team’s chances of winning a medal.
