Sushil Kumar: Despite the injured Sushil Kumar’s urge to postpone the men’s 74kg freestyle trial, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided to conduct this category of trials as per the earlier schedule. The star wrestler, however, may get a chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in March.
Sushil Kumar, who is struggling to revive his career, withdrew from the trial on Friday due to a hand injury and urged him to postpone his class trials. The winner of the trial for the first ranking series tournament to held in Rome from January 15 to 18, the Asian Championships to held from February 18 to 23 in New Delhi and the Asian Olympic qualifiers from March 27 to 29 in Xian, China Will get a place in the Indian team.
WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said that all classes (five in the men’s freestyle and six in the Greco-Roman) will be organized. Singh said that trials will certainly not postpone. We have wrestlers fighting in 74 kg. What can we do if Sushil Kumar gets injured?
The WFI president was asked if Sushil would be given a chance in the Asian qualifier, saying that we will see the performance of the winner of 74 kg in the ranking series. Only then we will decide on the next step. In the men’s freestyle, Ravi Dahiya (57 kg), Bajrang (65 kg) and Deepak Poonia (86 kg), while in the women’s category Vinesh Phogat (53 kg) won the quota for the Tokyo Olympic Games at the World Championships in Noor Sultan. Ravi, Deepak, and Vinesh have been asked to participate in the trial. The competition for these classes will be for the Rome and New Delhi competitions only.
WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said that Sushil Kumar could be asked to appear in the trial if WFI feels there is not a strong candidate for the Asian qualifier (for the Tokyo Games) in March. Sushil is struggling to get his career back on track. He was practicing with his Russian coach Kamal Malikov.
Sushil Kumar said that I will fit in two weeks. Don’t worry, I will return. I injure while practicing after the World Championship. WFI knows this. If they want to go on trial, that’s fine. Women’s trials will be in Lucknow on Saturday.
