Facebook Messenger has rolled out new updates to improve its opt-in end-to-end (E2E) further encrypted chat feature. This feature of the app is also called ‘Secret Chat’. Only secret chats on Messenger are E2E encrypted, which means they can’t be read by any other third-party, including Facebook.
E2E encryption has also been provided in Meta – owned instant messaging app WhatsApp. Under the new addition, Messenger is now rolling out E2E encryption for all group chats, including video and voice calls, in addition to individual chats. The feature was previously rolled out in beta for select users. It will now be available to all.
Messenger will also get a new notification when someone screenshot a Disappearing Message sent in Secret Chat. The company wrote in a blog post, “We think it’s important that you can use encrypted chat and feel secure, so we’d like to notify you if someone takes a screenshot of your disappearing message.” ”

In addition, GIFs and Stickers will also be available for a better chat experience in end-to-end encrypted chats. The reaction feature is also coming on E2E chat. Users can also choose the reaction of their choice, for that they have to hold and tap on the message, that you will see the reaction tray, in which you will see such reaction emoji as ️😆😮😢😠👍. Apart from this, you can also double-tap to “heart” a message.
Users will also be able to reply to specific messages in these chats. To do this, users will have to long-press the message or reply by swiping it.
Verified badge for end-to-end encrypted chat
Facebook Messenger will also add encrypted 1:1 and typing indicators for group chats. Apart from this, users can forward the message by long pressing on it. Also, when someone taps on the ‘Forward’ button, a share sheet will be displayed so that users can share with one or more people or groups. Users will also create a new group before forwarding a message.
Facebook will also bring verified badges for end-to-end encrypted chats to help users identify and interact with authentic accounts. Users can also save a video or image by long-pressing on any media they receive. And while sending in these chats, there is also an option to edit the video or photo.
