Signal has received a significant update: Now, users can change their registered phone numbers without losing their old chats. This is one of the features already available on its competitor platform WhatsApp.
Signal has support for end-to-end encryption, and all chats are linked to the number you used to create the account. User conversations are not stored on the cloud-based service, so when a user changes their phone number for any reason, they lose all chats that were linked to the previous number. But with the new update of Signal, this problem will no longer be there.
Now Change Phone Number Without Losing Chat in Signal
Now, you can update your phone number, and you won’t need to create a new account or delete your chats. Signal said, “If you are keeping your existing phone but switching to a new number, the Change Number feature allows you to access your profile and all your existing messages and groups on your device, making it accessible to your new phone number. Will keep it.”
Signal will also notify all your contacts when you change your phone number. The platform has confirmed that the feature is being rolled out to Android and iOS versions. In a blog post, This feature appears in the new version of Signal and is available for devices running at least Android v5.30.6 or iOS v5.27.1.
What is the point of attention?
If users cannot send or receive messages on Signal with the existing registered phone number, then this feature will not work. This also happens when a person loses or misplaces his primary device or phone is formatted.
Phone number change process
The process of changing the phone number is straightforward. User just need to open Signal app, now tap on Profile > Settings > Account > Change phone number > Keep Continuing. You can then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process for your new phone number. This process is for iOS devices. However, the process is almost the same for Android as well.
