Who Is Lina Khan, Who Is Creating Trouble For Meta

Could Meta (formerly Facebook) sell the Instagram and WhatsApp apps? Both these apps are a significant part of the company’s revenue, but why would the company do this? This is the Federal Trade Commission, which Lina Khan heads.

In March last year, Lina Khan was appointed to the commission by US President Joe Biden. The Federal Trade Commission has got a green signal from a federal judge, after which it can drag the giant tech company, Meta, to court in the Entry Trust case.

However, last year also, the agency went to court against Meta (then Facebook). At that time, the court did not hear the matter due to less information. This time the FTC has reached the court with a change in its complaint. The FTC alleges that Meta has a monopoly in the social network sector. However, the FTC’s eyes are on the social media company Meta and Amazon and Google.

Who is Lina Khan?

The name of 33-year-old Lina Khan has been associated with the antitrust issue from time immemorial. She has been known for her antitrust and competition law work in the US since Yale Law School. In March 2021, US President Joe Biden appointed her to the commission, and she has been working since June 2021. Along with this, he is also an associate professor at Columbia Law School.

FTC Previously Approved

Note that in 2012, the FTC approved Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram for $1 billion. At that time, the company had 13 employees. Two years later, i.e. in 2014, Facebook bought WhatsApp’s instant messaging app for $ 19 billion. The FTC is arguing that Facebook has sequentially bought out its competitors and created Monopoly.

The commission alleges that consumers are getting fewer options due to the company’s influence. Also, new tech and business innovations are not coming into this market. This has also reduced privacy protection.

In her career, Lina Khan has challenged big tech companies while advocating for the antitrust monopoly law in the US. However, Meta has used the same image of Lina in its defence. The company claims that Lina is biased towards companies. At the same time, Federal Judge James E. Boasberg, hearing the case, rejected Meta’s claim.
