The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said that the epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 40 kilometres. At present, no tsunami warning has been issued.

Earlier on Wednesday, strong tremors of earthquake were felt in Melbourne, Australia. It measured 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres near the town of Mansfield, northeast of Australia’s second-most populous city, AP news agency reported. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said there were no reports of any severe injuries. However, local media showed some pictures of the damage on Chapel Street in the inner suburb of South Yarra.

Three people were killed in this, while 60 others were injured. China’s Earthquake Network Center had said that its impact was in an area of 10 km. The earthquake displaced more than 6,900 people. These were shifted to another place while 10,000 were kept in makeshift shelters. The quake destroyed 730 houses while 7,290 were damaged.

This month a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Acapulco in southwestern Mexico, killing one person and injuring several others. The magnitude of the quake was measured at 7.0 on the Richter scale. It is said that the shock of the earthquake was so strong that the tall buildings were turned into rubble on sight.
