The lockdown in the country has extended to May 3 due to Coronavirus. PM Narendra Modi announced this effect on Tuesday morning. With this, it decided that IPL 2020 would postpone once again. IPL 2020 was initially scheduled to begin on March 29 but postponed to April 15 due to the Coronavirus. Now due to extending the lockdown period, BCCI will have to make a big decision.
IPL 2020 Set To Be Postponed
The BCCI postponed the IPL till April 15, due to which it has time till Wednesday to give its verdict, but it expected that BCCI would announce it on Tuesday i.e., today. BCCI will now have to find a separate window for this. Two options are being considered for this. The BCCI may conduct a shorter IPL 2020 from July to September. Apart from this, there is an option to get it done in October-November. If the ICC postpone the scheduled T20 World Cup in Australia from October 8 to November 15, then the BCCI can hold the IPL at that time.
If the BCCI does not get the appropriate window, it can also cancel IPL 2020. In this situation, BCCI will incur a loss of more than Rs 3800 crore directly. BCCI is to get 3200 crores from the broadcaster Star Sports, 400 crores from title sponsor Vivo, and 200 crores from other sponsors.
